Welcome!
Welcome to the writing site of Jim Balcerek
and Glen Eric Reed. On this site, you can get the latest news on their
individual and collaborative writing endeavors, look into producing one
of their plays or ordering scripts, and (hopefully) get answers to all
your other questions.
But you're not on this page to be welcomed;
you're here to find out more
about Hotline Plays. We're only too happy to oblige with our history.
In 2001,
Glen Eric Reed directed a production of the Elaine May one-act Hotline,
as part of Death Defying Acts. In the role of Ken,
he cast Jim Balcerek,
new to the theatre. The production went well, and eventually, Jim and
Glen
became friends.
Unbeknownst to each
other, Glen and Jim were both amateur
screenwriters, finishing several works before either knew the other had
taken
pen to paper. Once they realized they were both writers, they decided
to test
their ability to collaborate by writing a spec episode for the defunct Buffy
the Vampire Slayer series. That script,
Split
Decision, was
universally praised ... and they knew they had something.
Since both writers were
involved with theatre, playwriting
seemed the logical end-game. Eventually, Jim came to Glen with a
writing
exercise he'd been working on, mainly just to get his opinion. Glen
liked what
he saw, and figured it could be expanded upon and turned into a one-act
... the
result was A Book Deal,
which turned out
quite successful in performance. Hotline Plays was
born.

The People of Hotline
Plays
Glen has been writing
scripts for over 15 years, and prose for
much longer than that. He is a consummate dabbler, mostly in design, and also serves as HotlinePlays.com webmaster. Half
of Glen's
writing time is spent drinking coffee, pacing, or staring.
Glen currently resides
in southeastern Pennsylvania with his wife Gina and works
as a Managing Editor at Vertex
Inc. in
Berwyn. Other than writing, Glen spends his spare time acting,
directing, and
working backstage at local community theatres.
Jim's early writing
spent a lot of time in the horror-comedy
genre, of which he's still a fan. He's also an accomplished musician,
so when he's not writing scripts, he's often writing lyrics. Half of
Jim's
writing time is spent rejecting ideas.
Jim currently resides in
southeastern Pennsylvania and works as a hardware engineer for Brooks Instrument
in Hatfield. He spends his spare time doing community theatre and setting up the house
he finally found.
